How to prep for your boudoir Session

Fine Art Boudoir Photography

I often feel that the term ‘boudoir’ can be limiting. We have come to associate boudoir photography with sensual, perhaps nude images of the female form, often as a gift for a partner or to boost self-confidence, or both. While this is all true, I think it can go much deeper. For me, when I am working with a client who wants boudoir photography, the creative planning takes us into deep places, often revealing what makes someone want to show who they are at this very present moment in time. They may show up in ways that explore what it might feel like to be embodied, artful, powerful, vulnerable, present, connected, free, quiet, illuminated. Each unique person brings their body, mind, and soul to the session differently. Our motives might seem obvious on the surface, but the contemplative and sacred nature of being in and with the full human form in an artful way gives space for a new awareness.

So the first step is this: Be open to a deep experience. As your photographer, I make it a point to ensure that you feel safe and cared for. Don’t be surprised if something opens up inwardly through working this way. Some of my clients have been going through something deep, and tears have shown up by being present in the moment. It can also be wildly joyful and surprisingly freeing, so don’t be surprised if you laugh and get a bit silly. As a woman who has spent my life pursuing work that values the soul and all its surprises, I am practiced in staying attuned to hold space for whatever is coming up for you. The honor is getting to reflect it back to you with my lens.

Secondly: Consider your clothing. Boudoir photography sessions can literally be anything you want them to be. You can wear a dress, a slip, lingerie, a pantsuit with a deep V, or nothing! This is about you, how you like to feel, and what makes you feel that way. My recommendation is that you choose clothing that fits you well and makes you feel great. Steer clear of tight clothing that might leave lines and marks on your skin if you decide to change. If you buy something new, try it out before the session. Sometimes working with what you have and enjoy wearing is just the ticket. With each session, I provide a creative consultation as part of the process of working with me. Here we chat about the mood, tone, location, and what you might want to wear (or not wear). You also have the option to work with a stylist, who can help you choose from what you already own or pick out new outfits for you.

Third: Practice Self Care. Yes, we need to practice. Scheduling a boudoir session may be a huge step in caring for yourself. Before you come to the session, take time to consider some ways that might help you feel confident, embodied, and relaxed when you finally come to the session day. Practice being with yourself in the mirror. Notice if anything jumps out at you that you don’t like and speak gently to that part. Be compassionate and loving towards this miraculous body that is carrying you through the days of your life - this sacred vehicle of being in the world is worthy of your attention! Practice getting some good sleep, and hydrate with warm teas in the winter months. If you have the ability to, take time to get a massage, a facial, a hair trim, or a hairstyle. Hire a makeup artist if you want a polished look on your day (I can recommend some fantastic hair and makeup artists!). This is all an act of self-love. Why not let it last longer than a day?

And finally: Relax. I realize this is easier said than done. But trust me. I am here to guide you and make you feel safe. I will pose you in ways that make you look your best. I will light you in ways that celebrate your form and presence. Let me know if anything calms you when you feel nervous, and we can incorporate that into your session. Sometimes it’s nice to create a playlist that you like. Sometimes it’s about where the shoot takes place - I can come to your home if you feel most calm and centered there. This is YOUR session, you tell me what makes you feel good and I will weave it into the experience!

It is a deep honor to be present with you as your photographer, in every way. Fine art portraiture is all about presence and reverence. I am in awe of you, dear human. So if you’re dreaming about a way to celebrate where you are right now, and who you are in this moment, reach out and let me know below. I’d love to hear from you!
